The trust issue with AI

We've all been there. You ask a chatbot a seemingly simple but specific question about a product, a company policy, or a complex issue. What you get is either a blatant lie (hallucination), which often sounds very plausible, or a completely useless, usually very generic answer from the depths of the internet.

An example:
A customer asks an AI support bot: “What is the return policy for the new smartwatch in Germany?”

The bot's generic answer: “Return policies vary by company and country. Please check the official terms and conditions on the website.”

This answer only causes one thing for the customer: frustration. The AI has not answered the question, but instead sends the user back on a tedious search for further information.

Large language models such as GPT are fantastic tools for generating language and thus text. They can write poetry, develop code, and summarize complex texts. But when it comes to facts, current events, and, above all, company-specific knowledge, they quickly reach their limits.

This is where a technology comes in that turns the promise of artificial intelligence into reality: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). RAG is the crucial mechanism that makes AI not only convincing, but also up-to-date and absolutely trustworthy.

What is RAG and how does it close the knowledge gaps?

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is an architecture that addresses precisely these weaknesses. RAG combines the generation capabilities of LLM with an information retrieval system that accesses its own, up-to-date, and verified data.

Think of it as an AI team: the “searcher” (retrieval component) finds the facts, and the “writer” (LLM component) summarizes those facts.

The RAG process explained in 3 steps:

1. Retrieval
The user's question is converted into a vector representation (embedding).

This embedding is searched for in a vector database where all company documents (manuals, PDFs, wikis, database entries) are stored as vectors.

The system retrieves the most relevant text chunks (document segments) that semantically match the question.

2. Augmentation
The retrieved factual text chunks are inserted into the prompt of the large language model together with the original user question.

The prompt thus receives an additional command such as: “Answer the following question based solely on the document excerpts provided.”

3. Generation
The language model now generates the answer. It does not “hallucinate” because it does not have to answer from memory, but rather processes the evidence presented.

The result is a precise, well-formulated answer that can be directly accompanied by references to the documents used.
